Founded in 1806 in Yoro, Gifu, GYOKUSENDO is a historic sake brewery known for its philosophy of refinement through reduction. Using the exceptionally soft spring water of Yoro, the brewery produces sake with a gentle and delicate character. Its signature sake, “Reisen,” takes its name from a story dating back to 717, when Empress Gensho visited the waterfalls and springs of Yoro and referred to the water as “Reisen,” meaning a blessed or sacred spring. The same story also inspired the name GYOKUSENDO. With the aim of creating a visual identity that could represent the brewery for the next hundred years, we designed a new corporate logo that embodies both its name and its heritage.
CONCEPT
The identity reinterprets the two ideas contained within the name GYOKUSENDO — “gyoku,” meaning jewel, and “sen,” meaning spring — in a contemporary visual form. The shape of the Japanese character for “gyoku” is combined with the concentric ripples of flowing spring water to create a single symbol. The mark reflects the story of Yoro’s legendary spring, together with the image of a single drop of sake being carefully brewed and passed down through generations. These elements quietly spread, overlap, and converge within the logo.
