For “Under Voyager,” a solo exhibition by illustrator Mika Pikazo, I designed and produced a series of large-scale display works, including the paired pieces “Laika” and “Grey.

Full-body view of Laika, with the transparent left side revealing its robotic internal mechanical structure
Full-body view of Grey, with the transparent right side revealing its robotic internal mechanical structure and a receipt printer mounted in the chest

LAIKA

A work inspired by "Laika", the spacefaring dog. Installed at the entrance of the exhibition, she represents the starting point of the narrative of space exploration. Created as a symbol of the past, she is tying to transmit messages toward space.

Close-up of Laika’s head, filled with circuit boards, displays, and cables
LAIKA head
Close-up of Laika’s chest with a monitor displaying a blue screen error
Laika’s arm featuring mechanical components designed to resemble joints and motion mechanisms

GREY

A work inspired by the “Grey” alien archetype. Installed at the exit of the exhibition, she represents the endpoint of the narrative. Created as a symbol of the future and unknown visitors, she receives messages sent from Laika. The messages are printed using a built-in thermal printer, allowing visitors to take them home.

Installation view of Grey seen through the gaps between steel scaffolding pipes
Receipt printer in Grey’s chest printing the UNDER VOYAGER key visual and an encoded message
A long receipt printed from Grey hanging down to the exhibition floor

MAKING

Making of Laika’s head with displays, circuit boards, and internal wiring
Making of Laika’s leg, using dampers and aluminum rods to construct the skeletal structure
Overhead view of Grey during fabrication, with a mechanical skeletal structure arranged over the illustrated panel
Internal mechanisms of Grey’s thigh and palm, assembled from aluminum mechanical components
Overhead fabrication view of Grey and Laika side by side, with internal mechanical structures arranged over the illustrated panel
